Climate + Energy Policy Updates

TAKE ACTION! SAY NO TO EVERGY’S DIRTY RATE HIKES

TAKE ACTION! SAY NO TO EVERGY’S DIRTY RATE HIKES

Kansas’ largest utility monopoly, Evergy, is proposing a rate increase for nearly 1 million Kansas customers. The proposed rate increase would be one of the largest in the company’s history, hiking Kansas Central customers’ bills by more than $170 per year. Kansas City area Metro customers will see an additional $42 per year.

Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC) updates

The Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC) regulates Investor Owned Utilities and provides education to the general public. Climate + Energy project engages with the KCC by intervening in dockets, providing education to commissioners and staff, and encouraging more transparent and accessible engagement for the public at the KCC. The KCC is composed of administrative staff and three Governor appointed commissioners. Ultimately, decisions at the KCC play a large role in shaping energy policy. Learn more at kcc.ks.gov.

Evergy announced its Sustainability Transformation Plan at the end of 2020.

The Kansas Corporation Commission opened a General Investigation into Evergy’s plan to provide KCC staff, stakeholders, and Evergy an opportunity to discuss and evaluate the plan.

Make Your Voice Heard

The Climate + Energy Project is compiling public comments from our supporters to uplift the voices of public input in decision-making.
Help Kansas transition into the future equitably by exercising your civic duties and weighing in on energy policy.

If you prefer to submit your comment directly to the KCC, you can do so by using this link, emailing public.affairs@kcc.ks.gov or sending a letter to the KCC Office of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, 1500 SW Arrowhead, Topeka, KS 66604-4027.

legislative updates

Climate + Energy Project and the Clean Energy Business Council work with the Kansas legislature to advance climate and clean energy policies for Kansas. During the legislative session, CEP provides legislative updates and action alerts to encourage people to take action on important climate legislation. Year round, CEP works with coalitions to research, vet, and develop climate policies throughout the year. Lastly, we provide education for clean energy policy to legislators throughout the year.

Federal

Climate + Energy Project tracks federal legislation as it pertains to our legislative priorities. While we do not have a consistent presence in Washington, we are involved in several networks who work at the national level. Looking ahead through 2021, we are tracking the anticipated clean energy investments and working with our local agencies to interpret and administer these funds.

State

Climate + Energy Project engages and partners with agencies all across Kansas for clean energy advocacy. Recently, CEP co-hosted a series of events on wind energy with Kansas Department of Commerce, Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks, and Tourism, and others to educate county officials on wind energy education.

local

Climate + Energy Project serves as subject matter experts on a variety of local issues. Some of our recent work includes advising on the Douglas County Climate Plan, reviewing local ordinances, hosting a series of Wind Energy Workshops for local officials, and more.
