Featuring Keynote Speaker, Shalanda Baker

Shalanda H. Baker serves as the Secretarial Advisor on Equity and as Deputy Director for Energy Justice in the Office of Economic Impact and Diversity at the U.S. Department of Energy.

Prior to her appointment, she was a Professor of Law, Public Policy and Urban Affairs, at Northeastern University. She has spent over a decade conducting research on the equity dimensions of the global transition away from fossil fuel energy to cleaner energy resources.

She is the author of Revolutionary Power: An Activists’ Guide to the Energy Transition, over a dozen articles, book chapters, and essays on renewable energy law, energy justice, energy policy, and renewable energy development.

In 2016, she received a Fulbright-Garcia-Robles research fellowship to study climate change, energy policy, and indigenous rights in Mexico. She is the Co-Founder and former Co-Director of the Initiative for Energy Justice, an organization committed to providing technical law and policy support to communities on the frontlines of climate change.

Note: In order to ensure that everyone can hear Shalanda Baker’s message, we have adopted a Pay As You Can sliding scale for tickets this year. While this is a fundraising event, we don’t want cost to be a barrier for any community organizers or activists to be able to attend.

The Climate + Energy Project and our supporters build resilience in Kansas through equitable clean energy solutions and climate action. Energy justice is a critical piece of this work. The pandemic highlighted how energy insecurity exacerbates existing inequalities. Shalanda Baker’s work inspires advocates to integrate energy justice frameworks. Bring your friends to learn more about the importance of energy justice in climate action and help lead the way to an equitable clean energy future in Kansas.

Wind Energy: A Wildlife Biologist’s Take

As a wildlife biologist, I think that the impacts of commercial-scale land-based wind farms on wildlife have been significantly reduced, and that guidelines and regulatory measures are in place to reduce these impacts further. I am also convinced that climate change impacts wildlife much more than well-regulated wind farms.

SUN AND WIND
SUN AND WIND

In the face of the climate crisis, both the sun and wind are sources of new blessing. By harvesting solar energy from the sun in solar panels and harnessing the power of the wind with wind turbines, both sun and wind have become tremendous sources of clean and sustainable energy.
