Take Action & Weigh in on Energy Policy to Help Kansas Equitably Transition to a Clean Energy Future
Last Fall, Evergy submitted a Sustainability Transformation Plan (STP) that previews how they plan on transitioning to a more sustainable energy future. The Kansas Corporation Commission is accepting public comments on this plan, and these comments could shape the transition into a clean energy future.
While the comments won’t lead to a specific outcome, we believe ratepayers deserve to have their voices heard in their energy future. Public comments are not always included in these complicated dockets, which is why it’s important to have a high turnout so public engagement in energy planning becomes the norm.
What’s in the plan?
The STP is a thirty page document that Evergy released last fall. Climate + Energy Project has been advocating for a renewable transition for decades, and are happy to see that Evergy implemented feedback from stakeholders and plans on increasing renewable energy while retiring more coal plants. There are also investments in transmission lines, which is necessary to transition to renewable energy.

What’s not in the plan?
There is no clear pathway for robust investments in transmission that will grow rooftop solar. This is a critical component of grid reliability as well as a just transition. Further, there are very few plans outlined for energy efficiency, which would help lower customer’s bills and mitigate the impacts of the 1.8% rate increase.
What’s next?
Make your voice heard. Last time the Kansas Corporation Commission heard public comments, they listened! While this is not a simple support or oppose decision for the Commissioners, customers weighing in on dockets like this could help shape Kansas’ future, and increase the likelihood of public participation in the future. TAKE ACTION and tell the Commission you want an equitable transition to a Clean Energy Future.
