For Immediate Release: 2/4/20
On Monday February 10th, 2020, WEALTH Day will bring together organizations, advocates, and legislators from across Kansas to connect on Water, Energy, Air, Land, Transportation, and Health – WEALTH. The Climate + Energy Project has been hosting a collaborative event around climate issues for over a decade. In 2019, WEALTH Day convened 250 Kansans, 60 legislators, and 40 organizations.
“WEALTH Day provides a unique opportunity for Kansans to connect with each other, with organizations, and with legislators on environmental and climate issues,” said Dorothy Barnett, Executive Director of Climate + Energy Project. “By bringing Kansans together under the capitol dome, we hope to ignite important dialogs that lead to a resilient Kansas.”
New this year, the WEALTH Coalition will be sponsoring a Comprehensive Climate Hearing. The hearing will bring together a committee made up of members representing both chambers and parties, as well as members of the community with expertise or commitment to climate action to discuss the science of climate change, the costs to our state and agriculture economy, our health and environment, along with solutions and strategies for resilience. The chair of the hearing will be Representative Don Hineman of Dighton and will include Representatives Horn, Xi, Cox and Kuether, and Sen. Hardy along with a host of others.
Rabbi Moti Rieber, Executive Director of Kansas Interfaith Action and one of the organizers of the hearing, said, “This hearing will not be a rally, or a show; it will be a serious effort to address a problem that Kansas has been ignoring for too long. The information will be solid and the proposals will be both achievable and effective. We hope that it will kickstart a long-overdue conversation about climate disruption in Kansas.”
WEALTH Day registration for the local foods lunch, catered by Raven’s Table must be in by tomorrow, Wednesday, Feb. 5th.
