KCC approved grandfathering for existing Westar solar customers
After months of negotiation, the Climate + Energy Project and the Clean Energy Business Council are pleased to announce that the Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC) approved the docket grandfathering Westar distributed generation customers.
All Westar customers who installed solar between July 2015 and October 1, 2018 will have two rate options. They can return to the previous Residential Standard rate, or if demand charges proved to have worked in their favor they will have the option to stay with the demand rate. To help make the decision that works best, Westar solar customers will receive a bill comparison provided by Westar from October 1, 2018 through August 2019. Bill comparisons will go out no later than September 3rd comparing what the customer’s bill would have been under the previous Residential Standard (RS) rate and what they were charged under the RSDG rate (demand charges they paid over the past several months). Westar will be available to work with customers to determine which rate is best.
While there is much work to be done to ensure a growing solar industry in Kansas, this approval counts as a big win for Kansas solar. Let’s give a big round of applause to those from the Climate + Energy Project and Clean Energy Business Council who worked hard on these negotiations!
